About Lutherville Music School
Lutherville Music School is a welcoming music school in Lutherville, Maryland, offering private music lessons, student bands, summer camps, recitals, open mics, and workshops for kids, teens, and adults. Since 2011, we've taught more than 2,000 students from Lutherville, Towson, Timonium, Cockeysville, Parkville, Hampton, Rodgers Forge, Mays Chapel, and surrounding Baltimore County communities, and we've been recognized with a Baltimore Sun Reader's Choice award, a Macaroni Kid family-favorite award, and a top-3 local business rating.
A Place to Feel at Home
We believe students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and excited to come to lessons. That's why Lutherville Music School is built around a simple idea: students should feel like part of a musical family, not an appointment slot on a schedule.
Some students come to us with big dreams of performing on stage. Others are shy, nervous, or unsure if music is really "for them." Some want to learn classical piano, some want to play guitar in a band, some want to sing musical theater, and some just want to try something new. Wherever a student starts, we want them to feel known, encouraged, challenged, and celebrated.
Private Music Lessons for Kids, Teens, and Adults
We offer private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, drums, bass, ukulele, violin, strings, woodwinds, and more, depending on teacher availability. Lessons are one-on-one, so instruction is personalized to each student's age, experience, interests, goals, and learning style. Beginners are always welcome, and we also teach adults — whether starting for the first time, returning after years away, or continuing to grow as an experienced musician.
More Than Lessons: Bands, Performances, Camps, and Workshops
Students at LMS do far more than attend a weekly lesson. Throughout the year, they can take part in recitals, open mics, student bands, showcases, summer music camps, and workshops — building confidence, developing stage presence, and learning to collaborate with other musicians. Our band program gives students the chance to rehearse and perform as part of a real group, while our summer camps offer an immersive way to write, record, perform, and grow alongside other young musicians.
Teachers Who Are Mentors
Our teachers are more than instructors — they're mentors. A great teacher doesn't just correct wrong notes; they notice when a student is discouraged, celebrate real progress, and help students build habits that carry far beyond music. Our teachers bring different backgrounds, styles, and areas of expertise, but they share one mission: helping students grow musically and personally.
No Long-Term Contracts
Lessons are month-to-month, with no year-long commitment required. Many of our students stay with us for 5 to 10 years — because they want to, not because they're locked in.
Our Story
Lutherville Music School was founded in 2011, when Bruce Anderson — previously the director of education at Jordan Kitts Music, a well-known national music retailer — took over the space it left behind and kept a music lesson program alive in Lutherville. What started as a single lesson program grew quickly, and in 2013, working with Scott Fisher, Bruce added a Rock School: drums, electric guitars, and a real student band program.
Drew Wright, the current owner of LMS, started teaching here in 2014 and helped shape that band program from the ground up. Rather than have a large group of students wait their turn while only a few actually play during rehearsal, every LMS band is built so that every student is playing, every rehearsal — and students vote on the music they perform each session, instead of being handed a set list.
LMS held its first Band Showcase in May 2015 at Padonia Ale House with six student bands. By January 2020, the program had grown to about 20 student bands, performing at Hightopps Backstage Grille. When COVID-19 hit, LMS kept its community going — virtual lessons and camps, socially distanced band rehearsals in the parking lot, and even a parking-lot band showcase where families watched from their cars.
In 2023, Charm City Run — a well-known local business — purchased the building for their flagship store, and LMS used the opportunity to redesign its space around how it actually teaches, rather than the layout it had simply inherited — coming out the other side with a brand new stage, a revamped recording studio, modern practice rooms, and an upgraded recording system. In early 2024, Drew Wright bought the school from Bruce and has run it ever since.
A Note from the Owner
Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember — my family has a photo of me barely two years old, reaching up to play my grandmother's piano. I started piano lessons at six, picked up trumpet at ten, and then found the guitar at thirteen — the instrument that turned music from something I liked into something I needed.
In middle school, I was dealing with anxiety and depression, and discovering bands like Nirvana showed me that music could be cathartic — writing songs and playing loud gave me a genuine outlet for what I was feeling, and something to work toward instead of just get through. I formed a band with my best friend, Erik, called Asbestos, and over the next several years we wrote more than 60 songs, released two full-length albums, an EP, and a music video, and toured up and down the East Coast. For about ten years, I thought that was going to be what I did for a living.
In 2014, the band came to an end — around the same time I started teaching at Lutherville Music School. Looking back, I see it as more than coincidence: passing on what music had given me to the next generation ended up mattering more to me than performing it myself ever had.
Lutherville Music School is the place I wish had existed when I was fourteen. Not just somewhere to learn an instrument, but somewhere to learn everything that goes into being a musician — how to write a song, how to record it, how to book a show and set up your own gear, how to actually make a go of it as a gigging musician, and a community of other musicians to collaborate with and learn from along the way. Nothing like that existed for me growing up. I wished it had, so I built it for kids who feel the way I did.
Being a mentor — helping students build a skill that will stay with them for life, and maybe helping a few of them the way music helped me — gives me more purpose than touring the country ever did.
