Below are answers to the questions families ask most often before getting started.
What ages do you teach?
Lutherville Music School teaches kids, teens, and adults. We have a group music class for 3 and 4 year olds and start private lessons at 4. Many students begin lessons around ages 5–7, but the right starting age depends on the student, the instrument, and their interest level. We're happy to help families figure out the best starting point.
Do you teach beginners?
Yes! Beginners are welcome. Many of our students start with no previous musical experience. Our teachers are patient, encouraging, and experienced at helping new students build confidence step by step.
Do you teach adults?
Absolutely. We teach adult beginners, adults returning to music after years away, and experienced musicians who want to continue growing. It is never too late to start making music.
What instruments do you teach?
We offer private lessons in instruments such as piano, guitar, voice, drums, bass, ukulele, violin, strings, woodwinds, and more, depending on teacher availability.
How do you match students with teachers?
We consider the student's age, experience level, musical interests, personality, goals, schedule, and instrument. Our goal is to place each student with a teacher who will be a great musical and personal fit.
Are lessons one-on-one?
Yes. Our private music lessons are one-on-one, which allows the teacher to personalize each lesson to the student's goals, learning style, and pace. We also have group classes and a band program.
How long are lessons?
Most students take weekly 30-minute lessons. Some students, especially more advanced students or students studying multiple areas, may take longer lessons depending on their goals.
How often do students take lessons?
Most students take lessons once per week. Consistency is one of the biggest keys to progress, especially for beginners.
Do students need to practice at home?
Practice at home helps students make faster progress and feel more confident. That said, practice does not need to be overwhelming. Our teachers help students and families understand what to practice and how to build realistic habits. Students who do not practice at home will still make progress on their instrument, but not as quickly as students who do.
Do students need their own instrument?
In most cases, students should have an instrument to practice on at home. For beginners, this does not always mean buying the most expensive option right away. We're happy to help families figure out what makes sense before making a purchase and offer rental options for most instruments.
Can my child try lessons before committing?
Yes. We offer a free trial lesson so students and families can meet us, ask questions, and see if Lutherville Music School feels like the right fit.
Are there any long-term contracts?
No. Lutherville Music School lessons are month-to-month, and we do not require families to sign up for a year or semester at a time. Many of our students stay with us for 5–10 years, and we would love for your family to be part of our community for years to come. When it is time to cancel for any reason, simply email billing@luthervillemusicschool.com with at least 30 days notice to cancel your subscription.
How much do lessons cost?
Tuition depends on lesson length and program. Please contact us or book a free trial lesson for current pricing and availability.
Do you offer make-up lessons?
Our lessons follow a consistent weekly schedule, but if you provide at least 24 hours notice of a missed lesson, we may be able to schedule a make-up lesson with your instructor at a mutually agreeable time. If you know you'll miss a lesson, please let us know as early as possible, which will give us the best opportunity to help.
Do students perform?
Yes! Performance is a big part of the Lutherville Music School experience. Students have opportunities to perform in recitals, open mics, showcases, student bands, camps, and other events throughout the year.
Does every student have to perform?
No. We encourage students to perform when they are ready, but we never want performance to feel like a scary requirement. Some students love the stage right away, while others build confidence over time.
Do you have recitals?
Yes. We hold recital and performance opportunities throughout the year so students can celebrate their progress and share music with family and friends.
What makes Lutherville Music School different?

Do you offer band programs?
Yes. Our student band program gives musicians the chance to rehearse, collaborate, and perform with other students. Bands are a great next step for students who want to experience playing music with others.
Does my child need to be advanced to join a band?
Not necessarily. Band placement depends on age, instrument, experience level, and availability. We do our best to place students in groups where they can grow, contribute, and have fun.
Do you offer summer camps?
Yes. Lutherville Music School offers summer music camps for kids and teens. Camp options may include rock band camps, instrument-specific camps, songwriting, performance, recording, and other music experiences depending on the summer schedule.
Are your teachers background checked?
Yes! Student safety is extremely important to us. Our school has safety procedures in place, and our teachers and staff are expected to follow professional standards when working with students.
